7 Manufacturing Considerations OEMs Should Address Before Production

October 21, 2026

Off-road parts and component designs can meet their engineering specifications but still create unnecessary manufacturing challenges that can affect production cost, quality, and timing. To mitigate these risks, OEMs must address potential manufacturing issues during the design phase, well before production begins.

In this month’s blog, we uncover seven manufacturing considerations that OEMs need to address before their project reaches the shop floor:

How Will The Component Actually Be Manufactured?

Design requirements establish what a component must do. Manufacturing considerations determine how efficiently and consistently it can be produced.

Manufacturing costs are heavily influenced by design decisions, such as material availability, retooling requirements, collaboration with various production teams, tolerances, and testing requirements. This is why engineers must consider the manufacturing process during the design phase by collaborating with machining, fabrication, procurement, and quality management personnel to identify opportunities to simplify designs or select a more appropriate manufacturing process before production begins.

Are All The Specified Tolerances Necessary?

Tolerances define how a component must be manufactured and inspected, but precision requirements must match the part’s function. Therefore, OEM engineers should evaluate tolerances during the design phase because they can affect manufacturing feasibility and cost.

Input from the precision machining team on drawings, data, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) helps engineers establish the required form, fit, function, and interchangeability of parts, ensuring that the production requirements accurately reflect the component’s intended function.

Does The Material Work For Both The Application And The Manufacturing Process?

Material selection starts with the finished component’s requirements based on strength, durability, and the working environment of its final application. This is especially relevant for off-road equipment, where components are expected to operate reliably under demanding combinations of uneven terrain, weather, vibration, heat, contamination, and other operating conditions.

However, material selection should also consider compatibility with the manufacturing technologies used to produce the component. A manufacturing partner can evaluate those requirements together rather than treating material selection and production as separate decisions.

Has The Design Accounted For The Manufacturing Process?

For precision-machined components, engineers must consider how features can be produced and inspected using the available equipment and processes. The objective is not only to simply determine whether a feature can be manufactured, but also whether the design supports a repeatable production process that meets the required specifications.

Manufacturing expertise can provide insights into potential process constraints early in the process, when changes can be made easily to ensure accuracy and quality and mitigate the risk of production delays.

How Will The Component Fit Into The Larger Assembly?

Naturally, the finished component must fit into the larger assembly and interface seamlessly with surrounding parts. However, many designers miss opportunities to reduce part count and assembly complexity.

Fabricators can provide recommendations during the design phase to optimize part shape, fastener locations, tolerances, and the installation sequence, cutting production time and cost without reducing the component’s ability to function efficiently as part of the larger vehicle or equipment assembly.

Have Quality And Inspection Requirements Been Defined Early?

Quality requirements should be connected to the design and manufacturing process rather than treated as a final checkpoint. Manufacturers need to understand which characteristics must be controlled and how compliance will be demonstrated. Inspection requirements can also influence manufacturing methods, measurement processes, and production planning.

Establishing those requirements early, with input from the precision-machined parts supplier, will give all stakeholders a clearer understanding of both the component and the evidence needed to demonstrate that it meets all specifications.

Has The Operating Environment Been Considered From The Beginning?

As with material selection, the operating environment of the part’s final application must be considered early in the design process. Component requirements should reflect the conditions in which the finished equipment will operate, and manufacturing decisions need to support those requirements.

Before the project hits the production floor, the manufacturing partner needs to understand the application, not simply the drawing. That context can inform discussions around shape, tolerances, manufacturing processes, and quality requirements.
